More on Airport Security

I think everyone should be able to bring whatever they want onto a plane. My reasoning is that there are more “good” people in the world than “bad” people.

If my theory is true, September 11th would have never happened because all the “good” people packing guns would have shot the hell out of those terrorists before they took over the plane.

New Airline Rules Are Useless

These new airline rules for traveling are absolutely ridiculous. I am actually delaying my vacation plans until the TSA relaxes some of these rules.

I do not feel any safer that they are now taking away soda and gel from all passengers.

If they ban electronics, a rumor that is going around now, I will refuse to fly at all.

If we make traveling uncomfortable for 100% of travelers to try to increase safety by a few percentage points, the terrorists have won.

Oakland takes the win

I was so glad to see the Raiders defeat the Vikings last night. I know it is only pre-season but maybe that is a sign of things to come this year…

Internet is Broken

Is it just me or is there a lot of stuff broken on the Internet tonight?

I’ve noticed a high number of dead links, my sharebuilder account is down, WordPress is not working right, and everything is just really slow…

I feel like I’ve been transported back 10 years to dial-up and incomplete sites and services…

Dammit WordPress.

This new auto save feature does not work with Firefox on Linux.

I click publish and my posts disappear.

WTF?

I love WordPress but this is really annoying. How about fixing the error about not enought permissions when adding new categories also.

Actually I can’t get anything to post from wordpress’s editor anymore. I had to use the Performancing Firefox plugin to post.

Just Sayin…

Why not to raise the minimum wage

Right now, Congress is deciding on whether to raise the minimum wage for the country and by how much. I don’t think they should raise it at all and here is why:

We want to raise the minimum wage to help out those that are trying to make a living on minimum wage but raising the minimum wage will not help a thing because raising the wage raises inflation.

Don’t believe me?

How do you think McDonald’s and other places that pay minimum wage make their economic model work? Their business plan is based on making low cost food by utilizing low cost labor. You raise the labor you raise the food prices. Same thing happens for groceries because if it costs more to stock and bag groceries, who do you think will pay the extra? The consumer of course.

Many of your large franchises depend on cheap labor to be successful. From Wal-mart to Wendy’s , if you raise the amount they have to pay their workers, you effectively raise the cost of the goods they produce.

So the average middle class person won’t mind paying an extra 10 cents for a cheeseburger from McDonald’s, but your lower class people trying to make it on minimum wage sure will. Every cent they make in a wage increase will be spent on the added costs to commodities. Add in the extra tax for the inflated goods and now you just made your poor more poor.

But, there may be an answer. Even though I don’t believe in raising the minimum wage, I do think there are things we can do to help the lower class without affecting the cost of goods too much.

So here is my plan:

Let’s make the minimum wage based on age and merit just like everything else in this country (the right to vote, legal age to drink, smoke, amount of financial aid given for college, etc).

Let me clarify that a little bit. The wage would be configured so that older people with more dependents qualify for a larger minimum wage. Teenagers would start at the current minimum wage and as you had more mouths to feed or got older, you would qualify for a higher minimum wage.

Now I realize that this may cause some influence in hiring, by employers looking for cheap labor, so we would just have to whip up another equality law to align the hiring rules to not be prejudiced based on race, religion, sexual orientation, and now minimum wage level.

I think it’s worth a shot, if you are looking at really helping the poor. That or just do away with taxes for anyone that makes less than a certain dollar amount per year.

Thoughts anyone?

Just Give Me a Choice

Last night I sat down to spec out a new computer. Not that I really need one but I wanted to know what I could get for lets say under $400.

I went to HP and Dell and looked at their entry level machines and added at least 1GB of ram with an AMD processor because the Celeron ones are junk.

Then I went to pricewatch and configured a system from various vendors to my liking. Which is how I bought my last system which is great by the way.

The verdict?

The various vendors beat the big guys on every angle. They are using better cases, video cards, motherboards, RAM, etc and they still can beat the prices of the big dogs.

Why?

Cause they only give you what you need. I don’t want Windows installed. I already have a copy or two that I don’t use and I would load Linux, namely Ubuntu, on it anyway. I also don’t want a CRT monitor or some cheap printer. I don’t need a keyboard or mouse or any “productivity suite” that I will format on delivery day anyway.

Why don’t these guys figure this out? I understand that they are appealing to the home users that don’t know shit about a computer but lets offer the ability to buy without an OS and other bundled crap. Even prompt me if I forget and the website mistakes me for Aunt Mable. Just give me a choice.
