Technical insanity at its best!

Saw Jackass 2 yesterday

Jackass - The Movie (Full Screen Special Edition)We went out and saw the boys from Jackass yesterday and I was impressed. Way better than the original movie.

I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who hasn’t seen it, but I definitely recommend it.

The link above is for the first release as the second isn’t available yet…

Google Code Search reveals too much

Google released a new code search engine the other day.

This got me thinking of things it may index. Since I have recently started using drupal I crafted a URL to test if I could find out usernames and passwords to the main database.

Guess what I can!

Oh, looks like WordPress is no better

Let’s try Wikimedia. Hmm no better…

Let’s not just pick on PHP, how about DotNet? Guess so!

EDIT: Let’s not forget about Joomla, PHPNuke, or XOOPS

Looks like it only affects the zip and tarball files uploaded to the server for the most part but I wonder how many people out there back up their site in this manner?

I’m guessing we are about to see some major holes via this new service…

Webmasters, start your backups…

Older? Pickier? Oh Yeah!

I’ve noticed that once you get older you get pickier, which seems unlikely because you think you would be more easy going but that is not the case.

I have some friends in their thirties that are single, and in my opinion probably will be for awhile.

Why? Because they are so picky. One of them, a girl, told me she broke up with a guy after a few dates because she didn’t like the way he coughed. Another guy because the way he laughed. Or he had to much money. Or too little.

I am just amazed at how picky one becomes when looking for a mate once you have passed that 30 year old mark.

Maybe it is just the product of being older and wiser. Or maybe you know life is too short to put up with someone else’s crap. Either way I guess it may be a win-win situation!

WriteToMyBlog – web based blogging client

Mark, from WriteToMyBlog commented over here a few posts ago on his new service.

I was a little leery at first, not knowing if it was spam or not, but Lifehacker has picked up the lead so I guess it may be legit.

Anyway it looks pretty neat and would do in a pinch on a public computer if you didn’t have your favorite blog client handy. I’ll have to give it a try from Ubuntu and Firefox and see what happens…

Correct syntax for using SSH and SFTP on Ubuntu on irregular ports

I’m posting the following more for my own benefit and reference than anything else…

Correct syntax for SSH and SFTP on Ubuntu on irregular ports: (replace items in < > with your stuff, without the < >)

SSH:
ssh -p <port number> <username>@<server name>

SSH to accept socks 5 proxy on port you specify:
ssh -p <port number> <username>@<server name> -D <port to watch>

SFTP:
sftp -oPort=<port number> <username>@<server name>

Forward the X server from your remote box:
ssh -X -p <port number> <username>@<remote computer>

Unless your are a Linux geek or have some remote Linux servers you will probably never use this, but in case you do it sure is handy…

Next week we will dive into how to create a SSH tunnel (shunnel) using your Ubuntu box at home.

Identity Theft Victim

Well not me directly, but my fiance just noticed some erroneous charges on her credit card account from yesterday. Good thing she checks it pretty religiously.

It prompted me to call my bank this morning to see if debit cards are given the same benefits as credit cards such as zero liability and such. They are.

Supposedly.

Only thing is a few months ago I tried to do a stop payment on a recurring charge on one of my debit cards to cancel a service I was using that I was no longer happy with and they couldn’t. They told me they could have if it were a credit card though.

What are your thoughts/recommendations? Debit cards or credit cards?

Top Ten Windows Applications that are Hard to Live Without

Now that I have been using Ubuntu Linux for about 6 months pretty much full time, here is my list of software I cannot seem to replace:

  1. iTunes: This is one application that I have not even tried to replace on the Linux side. I refuse to do it. I think iTunes is that good. Hands down the number one app for Windows that is hard to walk away from and it’s made by Apple! I have to say Rhythmbox does come close though…
  2. Outlook: I know everyone says Thunderbird or Evolution but it just doesn’t come close. In an exchange environment (like we are) Outlook is king.
  3. GreatNews: Have I mentioned lately how much I love this little RSS reader? I have replaced it with Newsgator Online, but for a client app that can run from my thumb drive, GreatNews takes the cake.
  4. Visual Studio: Being a ex-developer, this application is missed greatly. I haven’t found anything on the Linux side that even comes close. In fact I don’t even know what to use for application development in Linux.
  5. Zoundry and Post2Blog: I’m grouping these together because they are both excellent client blogging tools that I use almost exclusively. The client tools for Linux do not even come close (from what I’ve seen). Where’s the WYSIWYG editor in the Linux choices? Post2Blog even supports installing it to your thumb drive now to create a mobile version.
  6. ePrompter: This little application is a blessing for checking multiple Hotmail or POP3 accounts and takes almost zero system memory. Almost the perfect little email tool for managing multiple accounts.
  7. Dreamweaver: I don’t care which version. Anything after 2004 will work. Hands down the best HTML editor in my opinion. Maybe Scream on the Linux side gets close but I cannot get used to the childish looking interface.
  8. Blackberry Syncing Software: I’m not even sure what the official name for this software is but I do know that it does not work in Linux. Good thing for Over the Air installs. It still leaves me helpless when it comes to having a backup of my contacts and other info on a regular basis…
  9. Flickr Uploadr: There is supposed to be a third party tool that works on Linux, but I can’t get it to run on Ubuntu. If anyone knows how please pass on the knowledge… F-Spot works pretty good to upload to Flickr, but it does not allow me to create new sets on the fly.
  10. QuickBooks: Even though I just started using it this year, I cannot figure out how I ever ran my business without it. I just wish they would offer a Linux version, because even their online version requires Internet Explorer.

I’ve heard other people say that Photoshop cannot be matched however for my light usage, The Gimp provides more than ample features and is easily navigated for the quick image or photo manipulation.

So there it is. My list of gotta-have Windows software. What do you miss?

When will the Bush administration end?

<start rant>

How much stuff can George W. Bush and his house of cronies mess up during his tenure?

Add to the list another case in point.

When will the madness stop? How many lives and freedoms have to die?

</end rant>

Got the fence stained

We got the fence stained this weekend thanks to Jesse loaning us his sprayer. Made the job painless, except for the sore arms after we were done!

Looks like we are going to consider siding the house with vinyl siding instead of staining it. We figure it will be worth the extra cost in the end by never having to mess with it again.
